News archives 2007AFL South Africa’s planning of this year was to organize a return tour of the AFL Indigenous Youth Tour. The experience was fabulous for our boys.FootyWild was officially launched during the AIS youth visit to South Africa. FootyWild is derived from the Australian introductory program called AFL Auskick. The African program will introduce young players to everything that is wild and exciting about the funny game from Australia. An Australian U17 team (AIS) made history when they played the first ever International game of footy against South Africa in Potchefstroom, the home of AFL South Africa, in the country’s North West. The Australian Football League (AFL) seconded it’s very first full-time staff member to an International post, with the appointment of Joel Kelly as Operations Manager for AFL South Africa (AFLSA). Gary Pert, CEO of Collingwood Football Club in Melbourne ,Australia, and his wife, Andi, visited South Africa, spending an afternoon in Khayelitsha with approximately 60 kids from the local area who were participating in a mini-Footy Wild clinic conducted by AFL South Africa. AFL South Africa was privileged to host one of Australia’s top schools, Geelong College. They spent some time in Potchefstroom (AFL South Africa head office) and also visited the neighboring communities, helping to run FootyWild clinics for local kids. AFL South Africa managed to expand the team with appointing 10 development officers from four provinces of South Africa. The Development Officers, will take the “Big 5” skills of footy to Primary schools throughout the country. Footy and FootyWild was officially launched in KwaZulu Natal with the present of the DJ Mzo from the local Gagasi 99.5FM, leading Australian music acts Evermore and Bliss ‘n Eso, and MTV cameras shooting a unique documentary that will headline the launch. Who wanted to experience the excitement of teaching and South Africa was his choice.The AFL Indigenous Youth Football Tour of South Africa and the North West Province was the highlight with the AFL Indigenous Team winning all three matches comfortably. The tour was a great experience for both the AFL Indigenous Team and the North West Team. The tour has been officially announced to be a regular event the benefits will much greater for South Africa. AFL South Africa and North West Cricket Association agreed to a partnership. Sedgars Park is now Administrative and Playing Headquarters of AFL South Africa. AFL SA have the usage of all facilities at the Sedgars Park which include the Gymnasium and all other conference and Entertainment areas. A team was sent to Australia to partake on the Barassi Youth Tournament for 2006. Click here to read news items from 2006! News archives 2005The visit of the Australian 'Convicts' football team to South Africa was the first event of 2005 and left a significant impact on South African Aussie Rules participants. The South African senior players had the opportunity to compete against 'genuine Aussies', and the growing number of junior participants could improve their skills at several coaching clinics hosted by the Convicts at Potchefstroom, Itsoseng and Ramatlabama.Jack Arnold from Melbourne, Australia was appointed on an 18 month contract as AFL South Africa’s new Australian Football Development Officer. The second International Cup was on the way and some preparations needed to be done, Training camps, Fund raising etc. Ron Barassi, Kevin Sheedy, Grant Thomas and Brian Dixon (Former Chairperson of AFL South Africa) joined forces in an attempt to raise funds for AFL South Africa. Junior Leagues took place, which most where a success. Vryburg was the outstanding community in completing their league and having more teams taking part. AFL South Africa held a press conference to announce some exciting developments in Australian Football in South Africa which included the announcement of four full time staff that was appointed. Mr Brian Dixon visited South Africa for the 10th time in 2005. Steven Harrison who worked for AFLSA as Head Coach for 2 years returned home after his hard working. The year ended with a big Umpiring & Coaching workshop that was held over a weekend and major footy festival was hosted by AFL South Africa. The festival attracted approximately 760 participants from Under 13, Under 16 and senior age groups. The teams came from 12 football playing communities in the North West and Gauteng provinces. The festival was privileged to have Fox Footy Channel presenter Tiffany Cherry, cameraman Tony Escotte, Herald Sun photographer Michael Klein, Emily Menon from World Vision, Glen Archer from the Kangaroos Football Club in Melbourne and his daughter Madison in attendance. News archives 2004Lots of good things happened this year.The first Inter Provincial Tournament took place, where the North West Province was partaking against Gauteng Province. Footy South Africa was boosted by successfully obtaining South African Lotteries funding for season 2004-2005 for R394,000. Tribute matches to mark the passing of one of Footy South Africa’s umpires was played between the Christiana Football Club and the Vryburg Football Club at Huhudi Stadium, Vryburg. The games were played in memory of Ms Boitumelo Mokgwetsi who passed away. She was knocked down by a car in her home town of Vryburg, at age 16. The players and members of the Vryburg Football Club were shocked by her death. This was the saddest memory that Footy South Africa (AFLSA) will never forget. The St Kilda Football Club kicked off their 2005 campaign by visiting South Africa in 2004 for a training camp in Potchefstroom, North West Province. News archives 2003The first National Championship took place in 2003.The Itsoseng Kangaroos stamped their name on South African footy history, making a clean sweep of the inaugural Footy South Africa National Championships. News archives 2002The major event in 2002 was the International Cup.In August 2002, the AFL conducted the International Cup which saw a team from South Africa and ten other countries – Canada, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the United States – compete in a successful competition. The competition was played in great spirits and at a standard generally higher than many had anticipated. The games increased significantly the international profile of the game.
